Donovan Waters, K.C., F.R.S.C. *

Dr. Waters is a non-practicing leading international expert in trust law and the author of several texts including Law of Trusts in Canada. He has had a distinguished academic career which has included positions at the Universities of Oxford, London, Chicago, Saskatchewan, Montreal and Victoria.

In addition, Dr. Waters has acted as legal counsel in relation to the establishment, operation and regulation of a variety of domestic and offshore trust structures created for private and commercial purposes. He has received two honorary degrees, a D.C.L. from Oxford, and a STEP Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in trust law. In addition to two hundred or more articles, he regards his most significant book as Law of Trusts in Canada, published by Carswell, Toronto, in 1974, and now with two assistant editors in its 4th edition, 2012. Widely cited in the courts.

His diverse practice experience includes mutual fund and other pooled investment trusts, land and mortgage syndication trusts, land reclamation trusts, First Nations trusts, trusts created for active business and business succession purposes, charitable trusts, pension plans and all manner of estate planning related structures in wills and family trusts. Dr. Waters is also called upon regularly to provide legal counsel in the context of litigation involving fiduciary relationships and equitable remedies.
